Expert care for stomach, bowel and digestive concerns with our private Gastroenterologists and General Surgeons
Digestive health refers to the function of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract – including your stomach, intestines, bowel, liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
Our specialists including Consultant Gastroenterologists, General Surgeons and Colorectal surgeons investigate and treat symptoms like abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, acid reflux, bloating and bleeding – as well as chronic conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and coeliac disease.
Whether your treatment is medical, surgical or diagnostic, we’ll help you feel supported every step of the way.
If you’re worried about a change in your digestion or bowel health, we offer fast access to consultations, tests and treatment - often without needing a GP referral.
Our consultants diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including:
We’ll explain your options clearly and recommend the right tests or treatments for your needs.
If you need a diagnosis or would like advice about your treatment options, find your nearest hospital or clinic to book an appointment with a private Spire GP or to find a consultant.

Do I need a referral to see a gastroenterologist or surgeon?
Not always. Many of our consultants accept self-referrals, so you can book an appointment directly without going through your GP. If you have private medical insurance, check with your provider, as some insurers do require a GP referral.
How much does private digestive health care cost?
Initial consultations typically start from £200 though this can vary by consultant and each consultant sets their own consultation fees so please check before making the appointment. You will be informed of the cost of any tests or treatments before they take place. We’ll provide clear pricing and payment options so you know what to expect.
Can I get a private colonoscopy or endoscopy?
Yes we offer these tests with short waiting times. Your consultant will explain whether you need one and what’s involved.
What’s the difference between gastroenterology and general surgery?
Gastroenterologists are specialists who diagnose and manage digestive and bowel symptoms using medication, lifestyle advice and minimally invasive treatments. General and colorectal surgeons are trained to perform operations on the digestive tract if surgery is needed.
Most people experience indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, at some point in their life.
