Transcranial magnetic stimulation is approved by NICE as effective and safe and the effect is long lasting.

Why you might need it

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is an innovative, safe, effective and well-tolerated, non-invasive treatment for patients with depression including those who have not benefitted from antidepressant medications, cannot tolerate antidepressant medications due to side-effects or wish to treat depression without medication.

The treatment can help with:

  • Depression and Severe Depression
  • Treatment Resistant Depression that has not responded to antidepressant medication
  • Intolerance to side effects of antidepressants (weight gain, tiredness, sexual dysfunction and sleep problems etc)
  • Post natal depression, women who wish to breastfeed and avoid transmission of antidepressant medication
  • Those who do not want to have ECT (electro-convulsive therapy)

It is highly effective and long lasting treatment for the symptoms of depression, with minimal side effects. There is no need for any anaesthesia and daily activities can be resumed immediately after each session.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

The procedure

It is a non-invasive method of brain stimulation that relies on electromagnetic induction using an insulated coil placed over the scalp, focused on the area of the brain thought to play a role in mood regulation.

The coil generates brief magnetic pulses which pass easily and painlessly through the skull and into the brain. When these pulses are administered in rapid succession, it is referred to as “repetitive TMS” or “rTMS” which can produce longer lasting changes in brain activity.

The treatment usually comprises of daily sessions (5 days a week) for typically 2 to 6 weeks. The treatment is administered by a highly trained staff member with experience in mental health and rTMA. Each session lasts around 40 minutes and patient response to the treatment will be monitored by a Consultant Psychiatrist.

Daily activities can be resumed immediately after each session including driving.
