The procedure

It is a non-invasive method of brain stimulation that relies on electromagnetic induction using an insulated coil placed over the scalp, focused on the area of the brain thought to play a role in mood regulation.

The coil generates brief magnetic pulses which pass easily and painlessly through the skull and into the brain. When these pulses are administered in rapid succession, it is referred to as “repetitive TMS” or “rTMS” which can produce longer lasting changes in brain activity.

The treatment usually comprises of daily sessions (5 days a week) for typically 2 to 6 weeks. The treatment is administered by a highly trained staff member with experience in mental health and rTMA. Each session lasts around 40 minutes and patient response to the treatment will be monitored by a Consultant Psychiatrist.

Daily activities can be resumed immediately after each session including driving.

Important to note

The treatment described on this page may be adapted to meet your individual needs, so it's important to follow your healthcare professional's advice and raise any questions that you may have with them.
