Neurology is the medical specialty that diagnoses and manages disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Our consultant neurologists assess symptoms, order specialised tests and coordinate medical (non-surgical) care and long-term management plans. We offer experienced neurology teams and neurophysiology services to provide timely assessment and testing

• Dizziness and balance disorders
• Epilepsy and seizure disorders

• Movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s)
• Multiple sclerosis and inflammatory neurological conditions
• Muscle diseases and motor neurone conditions (diagnostic pathways)

If a condition needs surgery, we’ll coordinate with our spinal and neurosurgery teams.

Our tests and scans help your consultant find the cause of your symptoms; we’ll tell you how to prepare and when to expect your results

• MRI (brain / spine): non-invasive imaging to look for structural causes.
• EEG (electroencephalogram): records brain electrical activity to investigate seizures and some types of collapse. 
• Nerve conduction studies (NCS) / EMG: assess peripheral nerve and muscle function
• Blood tests / lumbar puncture: when required for diagnosis (e.g., inflammatory or infectious causes).
• Neuropsychology or specialist clinic assessments for cognitive or movement disorders.

What does a neurologist do?
A neurologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord and nerves. This includes headaches and migraines, seizures, dizziness, tremors, neuropathy, and diseases such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

When should I see a neurologist?
You should see a neurologist if you’re experiencing ongoing or unexplained symptoms such as:

• Persistent or severe headaches
• Numbness, tingling or weakness in your limbs
• Loss of balance, coordination or memory
• Seizures or fainting spells
• Tremors or involuntary movements

What tests might I need?
Your neurologist may recommend investigations such as:

• MRI or CT scan - to take detailed images of your brain or spine
• EEG (electroencephalogram) - to assess brain activity
• Nerve conduction studies or EMG - to test how your nerves and muscles work
• Blood tests - to look for inflammation, vitamin deficiencies or other causes

How are neurological conditions treated?
Treatment depends on your diagnosis but may include:

• Medication to manage symptoms or slow disease progression
• Physiotherapy or occupational therapy
• Injections for chronic migraine or muscle spasms
• Lifestyle advice to help you manage triggers and improve wellbeing
• Referral for surgery if needed (for example, for trapped nerves or spine problems)

Do I need a GP referral to see a neurologist at Spire?

In most cases, no, many of our consultants accept self-referrals for certain tests or assessments. However, some consultants do ask that your GP can make a direct referral with any medical history. Please check with your nearest Spire hospital or clinic.

Can I get a private MRI or EEG without a long wait?
Yes. Spire offers fast access to diagnostic scans and tests, often within days. Your consultant can explain which tests you need and arrange them at a time that suits you. Services available will differ at each hospital or clinic.

Will my results be shared with my GP?
Yes. With your consent, your neurologist will share your test results and treatment plan with your GP, so your care is coordinated.
