Total body lift

Especially helpful for patients following considerable weight loss.

A major operation involving the removal of areas of excess skin and soft tissue, particularly of the abdomen and lower back areas.

Why you might need it

A total body lift is sometimes referred to as a circumferential body lift or an upper and lower body lift.  It is a major operation involving the removal of areas of excess skin and soft tissue, particularly of the abdomen and lower back areas.

It may involve lifting the whole abdominal skin, repositioning of the belly button and tightening of the abdominal muscles and also lifting of the buttock skin and repositioning.

A total body lift procedure can cover numerous individual procedures such as liposuction, thigh lifts, buttock lifts, arm lifts and tummy tucks as a whole operation.

Total body lift surgery is used for patients with excess skin over their bodies and is especially helpful for patients following considerable weight loss and who may, as a result, have lost skin elasticity.  Excess skin can cause chafing and discomfort, as well as prevent patients from wearing clothes in a smaller size.

Who will do it?

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care. To us, that means you can choose the consultant you want to see, and when you want. They'll be with you every step of the way.

All of our consultants are of the highest calibre and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals.

Before your treatment

You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

The procedure

A total body lift procedure can cover numerous individual procedures such as liposuction, thigh lifts, buttock lifts, arm lifts and tummy tucks as a whole operation.

For patients following significant weight loss other adjunctive procedures may be required.  A consultation regarding the risks and limitations of surgery will help you to choose a procedure that will meet with your expectations.

A total body lift procedure is a major operation, performed under general anaesthesia. The operating time and your length of stay in hospital will be determined by the extent of the surgery as discussed at the initial consultation but you can expect to take up to six weeks at home for initial recovery.

We have safety limits on the amount of surgery that can be undertaken at one time, depending on the hospital facilities – your surgeon will discuss this with you. For example, if your surgeon is undertaking liposuction as part of the procedure, or to another part of your body at the same time, our policy is that we will remove no more than a maximum of 2000ml of aspirate (fat and fluid) from all areas combined.

Aftercare

Your length of stay in hospital will be determined by the extent of the surgery as discussed at the initial consultation but you can expect to take up to six weeks at home for initial recovery.
