Spire Nottingham Hospital pioneers groundbreaking open-heart surgery with innovative valve replacement
08 September 2025
Spire Nottingham Hospital has reached a historic milestone in cardiac surgery, becoming the first private hospital in the Midlands to perform an open-heart operation using the revolutionary KONECT RESILIA aortic valved conduit. Developed by Edwards Lifesciences, this leading-edge implant is the first of its kind to be approved for use in Europe, representing a major advancement in the treatment of aortic valve disease.
The innovative KONECT RESILIA aortic valved conduit offers a pre-assembled design that streamlines the procedure by reducing several surgical steps. This efficiency is particularly beneficial in complex or high-risk cases, allowing for faster, more effective treatment with enhanced patient outcomes.
The surgery was led by Mr Giovanni Mariscalco, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. The highly specialised device is gradually being adopted across healthcare settings and only beginning to be introduced within the NHS. Its availability at Spire Nottingham Hospital means patients in the region can now access this next-generation treatment without delay.
Mr Giovanni Mariscalco, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Spire Nottingham Hospital said: “We’re incredibly proud to be the first private hospital in the Midlands to perform this groundbreaking procedure. The ability to offer patients the benefits of this next generation aortic valve conduit is a major step forward in cardiac care.”
Natasha Young, Hospital Director at Spire Nottingham Hospital, highlighted the impact of this new service: “We are immensely proud to be leading the way in cardiac care in the Midlands. This milestone not only demonstrates our commitment to embracing leading-edge technology but also reflects our ongoing dedication to providing patients with the highest standards of treatment.”
