“We are proud to be a double finalist in the LaingBuisson Awards. By sharing best practice, advancing patient safety, supporting NHS delivery and pioneering innovative approaches to care, Spire continues to play a leading role in raising standards and shaping the future direction of UK healthcare.”
Quality Improvement
Over the last two years, Spire has run a Quality Improvement programme to reduce VTE (venous thromboembolism or blood clots), a known complication of surgery. The programme delivered a 64% reduction in VTE incidence in hospitals.
Colleagues now have improved recognition of VTE when it unfortunately occurs and can administer rapid treatment. As a result, the number of patients treated within The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) timeline guidelines has increased by 80%. A case review is now undertaken for every VTE to look for learning, allowing themes and trends to be addressed and Spire is striving for zero avoidable VTE.
Spire’s work on educating its workforce and early mobilisation have now been adopted by at least one NHS trust and many more have shown interest. The work has also been shared via an international learning group with colleagues across the globe who are looking to implement some of the solutions to improve VTE care at their sites.
Supporting patients from prevention to recovery
Over recent years, Spire has evolved from a pre-dominantly hospital-focused provider into one of the UK’s most integrated independent healthcare groups. Today, the company cares for more than 1.3 million people annually through a network of hospitals and clinics delivering surgery, private GP services, diagnostics, mental health, physiotherapy, occupational health and primary care services. Spire provides seamless, joined-up care, from prevention and early diagnosis through to treatment, recovery and on-going support.
The award winners will be announced by LaingBuisson at an event on 19 November.
