CQC upgrades Spire South Bank Hospital rating to 'Good'

10 February 2022

Spire South Bank Hospital in Worcester has seen its rating improve to ‘Good’, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out an unannounced examination into surgical services offered at the 25-bed hospital in December 2021. In its report published today, the CQC rated the hospital surgical department ‘Good,’ and upgraded the hospital’s overall rating to ‘Good.’ They also rated the hospital ‘Good’ in each of the individual categories; safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led.

Last time the hospital was inspected, in 2016, the hospital was rated ‘Requires Improvement’.

Today’s report means that 95% of Spire’s hospitals – 38 out of 40 in total – are rated ‘Good, ’Outstanding’ or the equivalent in Scotland and Wales.

In the report, inspectors made special mention of the care provided by hospital colleagues. They praised the compassion and kindness with which staff treated patients and provided emotional support for patients, their families and their carers.

The CQC also praised the way that the hospital tailored services to meet patients’ individual needs and the needs of the local community. Colleagues helped patients understand their conditions, provided them with good information and supported them to make decisions about their care. Staff also provided advice to patients on how to live healthier lives.

Inspectors also noted that key services were available seven days a week and that patients did not have to wait too long for treatment.

Finally, the CQC commended as outstanding the quality of leadership at the hospital, and colleagues’ pride about working there.
