CQC rates Spire Bristol Hospital as 'Good'

23 June 2022

Spire Bristol Hospital has maintained its ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection of services offered at the hospital in February. In its report published today, they rated it ‘Good’ overall, and in the individual areas of being safe, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led.

In today’s report, inspectors made particular mention of the care provided by hospital colleagues. They described staff as treating patients with compassion and kindness, respecting their privacy and dignity, and providing emotional support for patients, their families and their carers.

The CQC also noted that colleagues took account of patients’ individual needs, and helped them to understand their conditions.

They commented that the hospital engaged well with patients and the community to plan care to meet the needs of local people. They also stated also that patients did not have to wait too long for treatment.

The hospital recently completed a £3.5m improvement programme, which included new ultrasound machinery, special scanning devices for heart disorders, new beds, an enlarged car park and repair work around the perimeter of the hospital, completed in partnership with Bristol City Council.

During the pandemic, the hospital provided care to almost 2,500 NHS inpatients, who needed treatment for cancer and other critical conditions, and many thousands of NHS outpatients. It is now helping local NHS trusts in addressing waiting lists in the area.

Phil Curran, Hospital Director at Spire Bristol Hospital, said: “In everything we do, we strive to provide our patients with fast access to diagnosis and treatment, in a comfortable environment. “Today’s Good rating from the CQC demonstrates that we are achieving our aim. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of our colleagues here at Spire Bristol Hospital, who have retained their commitment to delivering compassionate, safe and high-quality care to all our patients, in spite of all of the pressures of the past two years.

“The CQC has given us valuable feedback that we can use to build on our current services.  Our goal is now to incorporate this learning as we seek to play our role in meeting the rising demand for healthcare in Bristol and the surrounding area.”

95% of Spire Healthcare’s hospitals are rated ‘Good,’ ‘Outstanding’ or the equivalent by health inspectors in England, Wales and Scotland.
