I am a Consultant Laparoscopic, Liver and Pancreas Surgeon at the Freeman Hospital and Newcastle University. I am one of only a few Gallbladder, Liver and Pancreas specialists in the UK that works in a supra-specialist liver and pancreas unit that also includes transplantation.
I am a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and graduated with Honours in Surgery from the University of Leicester and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) for research. My surgical training included rotations in the Leicester and Leeds Liver Units. I have also won numerous prestigious fellowships at some of the most famous hospitals in the world including The John's Hopkins (Baltimore), The Mayo Clinic (Rochester) and the Sloane Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. I was the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain travel fellow in 2002.
I have an international reputation in laparoscopic surgery and was recently made a Professor of Surgery for outstanding achievement. I have one of the largest personal series of laparoscopic liver and pancreas resection for cancer in the UK but also specialise in less complex laparoscopic surgery for gallstones and hernias. I also see complex patients from overseas and do complex medicolegal work.
I am also a medical advisor to The National Institute of Clinical Excellence and is on the National Cancer Peer Review Team.
I have published over 200 research articles and written chapters for various surgical text books on laparoscopic surgery. I have my own research group within the University of Newcastle and has been awarded nearly £4 million in research funding. My research interests include cancer of the liver and pancreas in addition to cell transplantation.
