Having qualified BM with Honours in 1987 I trained in Cardiology at The Royal Brompton, London Chest, St Bartholomews hospitals before getting a post as Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary between 1999-2003. I then moved to my current post in Southampton in 2004 where I pursued a full time clinical post in interventional cardiology as well as an increasing commitment to contributing to and organising clinical research. I was promoted to Professor of Interventional Cardiology by the University of Southampton in 2013 and currently run a large research programme alongside my clinical practice.

I have considerable experience in coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and stenting. For the last 7 years I have been part of the team delivering keyhole aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in Southampton. I am an expert in image based assessment of cardiovascular risk.

As Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Southampton I have a very active research programme and run teams looking at blood clotting, coronary artery physiology, cardiac imaging and computer models of cardiac interventions. I collaborate with researchers throughout the UK as well as in Europe and USA. I am Chief Investigator for a large multicentre Uk trial called RIPCORD 2 as well as for COMET. I have been lead investigator for studies including RIPCORD and FFRCT RIPCORD.

I have been part of the Steering Committee for other multicentre UK trials including BBC ONE, CVLPRIT & FAMOUS. I have published 196 peer review papers, over 20 book chapters and have edited 3 cardiology textbooks including being co-editor of The Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology.
