I am a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon in Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Clinical Chair at Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), The University of Manchester.
Having received Clinical Excellence Awards from NHS organisations, I have established a strong clinical practice with excellent clinical outcomes, as demonstrated by national audits. My clinical work has strongly enhanced the local vascular unit, which provides complex regional vascular services to one of the most deprived areas in the North West.
I am a world expert in vascular and endovascular surgery with an academic interest in evidence synthesis, clinical practice guideline development, and aortic aneurysm research. I have published more than 300 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have attracted more than 10,000 citations. Several of my publications in the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery have been selected as the Editor’s Choice, and I have been awarded for highly cited work by the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
I am internationally regarded as an opinion leader in vascular/endovascular surgery, as testified by the numerous editorials I have been asked to write by the most prestigious journals in the field, and lectures I have been asked to give in international conferences.
I specialise in open and keyhole surgery for aortic aneurysm, hybrid (combined open and keyhole) surgery for diseased/blocked arteries in the legs (peripheral arterial disease), surgery on carotid arteries for stroke prevention, diabetic foot surgery, and treatments for varicose and thread veins. I apply minimally invasive therapies for varicose and thread veins, including radiofrequency ablation, laser therapy and foam sclerotherapy.
I am certified by the European Board of Vascular Surgery in surgery and vascular surgery.
I am the principal investigator (PI) for several National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) clinical studies and sit in the panel of national and international scientific committees, including:
I am the co-ordinator for the Guidelines on Vascular Malformation developed by the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and the European Reference Network for Rare Multisystemic Vascular Diseases (VASCERN).
