Virtual consultations:
I have been a Consultant Cardiologist at Blackpool Teaching Hospital for over 20 years. I grew up locally in Lancashire and was educated in Longridge and Preston before graduating from the University of Manchester. I completed my cardiology training at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Vancouver General Hospital in Canada. My principal clinical interest is the treatment of patients with angina, including coronary angioplasty and stent implantation.
I also have a specialist interest in cardiac CT and was one of a small number of clinicians in the UK to achieve board certification in this field nearly ten years ago. Working in collaboration with the hospital, I helped develop comprehensive cardiac services including echocardiography, exercise testing, Holter monitoring and cardiac CT scanning.
My clinical expertise includes the management of angina, heart failure, palpitations, hypertension and cardiac risk factors. I provide and interpret a wide range of cardiac investigations, including transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, exercise testing, Holter monitoring, event recording, 24‑hour blood pressure monitoring and cardiac CT. I have specialist expertise in coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, pressure wire assessment and coronary rotablation for heavily calcified arteries.
Over my consultant career and training, I have performed more than 3,000 angioplasty procedures and over 8,000 coronary angiograms across both NHS and private practice. I also helped establish a joint cardiology and radiology cardiac CT service, which has become one of the busiest services of its kind in the North West.
In addition to my clinical work, I have held leadership and governance roles, including Clinical Director at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. I served as a member of the North West Ethics Committee for nearly ten years until early 2017. I have a strong interest in education and patient affairs and contribute actively to the General Medical Council in a number of roles. I also act as a Clinical Adviser to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.
I am an Honorary Clinical Tutor at the University of Liverpool and sit on the Joint Local Negotiating Committee at Blackpool Teaching Hospital. I am a British Medical Association representative, a member of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals, and a Clinical Governance Committee member at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital.
