I am Clinic Lead for Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgery at University Hospitals Birmingham. I have extensive experience in the management of benign upper gastrointestinal and general surgical conditions, including bariatric (weight loss) surgery.
I have a particular interest in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and use laparoscopic techniques wherever appropriate to support faster recovery and optimise patient outcomes. I have extensive experience in laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, performing approximately 150 laparoscopic cholecystectomies each year. I also regularly perform hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery.
I completed my surgical training in London before undertaking a prestigious fellowship in bariatric surgery at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, an internationally recognised centre for bariatric and upper gastrointestinal surgery. This fellowship provided me with extensive specialist experience in both upper gastrointestinal and general surgery.
I perform bariatric surgery in both the NHS and private sector. My private bariatric patients are supported by the multidisciplinary team at Healthier Weight, providing comprehensive pre-operative assessment and a structured programme of post-operative follow-up. All of my bariatric procedures, both NHS and private, are recorded in the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR), helping to monitor outcomes and contribute to national standards of care.
I am committed to surgical education and training. I am a Royal College of Surgeons Tutor for University Hospitals Birmingham, where I support and guide the development of surgeons in training.
I have a strong academic background and have published more than 65 peer-reviewed research papers. I completed a PhD at Imperial College London investigating the use of breath testing for the early diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disease.
Alongside my laparoscopic practice, I also perform robotic-assisted surgical procedures within my NHS practice.
