Mr Tom Symes
MBChB, MSc, FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics)
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in Hip and Knee Replacements. I also have a special interest in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). This means that the patients I operate on receive the most up to date anaesthetic techniques to control pain and are able to mobilise quickly and safely after surgery. This results in a lower rate of problems post-operatively and enables patients to be discharged home earlier. I treat arthritis, soft tissue and sports injuries of the hip and knee.
I trained as a doctor and surgeon in Leeds, Yorkshire, and the North East of England. I then undertook specialist training in hip and knee replacement at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow. Here I trained specifically to perform navigated (computer aided) knee replacement.
I am a Clinical Lead Consultant at Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Hospital Trust and lead for ERAS in the trust. I am the Clinical Director for the Trauma Division at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, a Major Trauma Consultant and Honorary Lecturer with Hull York Medical School.
I have published several papers, contributed to two best selling orthopaedic textbooks and lectured at national meetings on enhanced recovery.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Tom Symes at Spire include:
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Clinical Director for Trauma Division
Major Trauma Consultant
Honorary Lecturer, Hull York Medical School
I was brought up in Derbyshire and then moved to Leeds for my medical school training. I trained as a surgeon in Scarborough and then the North East including Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Carlisle. I moved with my family to Scotland for a year and have now settled in East Yorkshire. I am married with four young children who keep me very busy.
