I qualified from the Universities of St Andrews, Scotland and Manchester in 1992. I’m an NHS Consultant at Wrightington Hospital. My clinical practice is exclusively surgery of the ankle and foot and sports injuries.
I gained my specialist training in Manchester before completing an International Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Fellowship in Canada. During my training I won both the Sanofi Synthelabo Travelling Fellowship prize in 2002 and the British Orthopaedic Foot Surgery Society Travelling Fellowship Prize in 2003. I’ve published articles on ankle and big toe joint replacement surgery, day case forefoot surgery, trauma foot surgery and the role of PRP in plantar fasciitis. I regularly present as Faculty Member at regional, national and international meetings. I’m a PROMS (Patient Related Outcome Measure Score) Lead at my NHS Trust in foot and ankle, and also the senior foot and ankle specialist at the Trust.
I’m currently the Foot and Ankle Club Surgeon for a local Premiership football team, Super League rugby teams and a local Rugby Union team. I’m actively involved in medico-legal practice dealing with personal injury cases.
I’ve been Chairman of Faculty for the foot and ankle module for an MSc in Sports Orthopaedics at the University of Salford and I’m an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University. I sit as an External Examiner for the School of Medicine BMSc programme at the University of Dundee. I’ve been invited onto the international faculty evaluating ankle joint replacement design, I’m a specialist adviser to NICE for the Interventional Procedures Programme, a member of the International Advisory Board and Editorial Committee for the specialist medical journal ‘The Foot’, and an elected member of the Scientific Committee for the British Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS). I’ve been trained as an Appraiser and perform yearly peer appraisals at my NHS Trust. I’ve also been trained by the NHS National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS) as a Case Investigator. I’m a currently a clinical and educational supervisor at Wrightington for the BOA appointed Transitional Fellow in Foot and Ankle.
Special Clinical Interests; Ankle arthroscopy, ankle and hindfoot arthritis, ankle replacement surgery, ankle instability, surgical management of the rheumatoid foot, hallux valgus (bunion), joint replacement surgery to the big toe, sports injuries of the ankle and foot, ligament injuries in the ankle and foot, ankle and foot fractures, metatarsalgia, Morton's neuroma, hammer/claw/mallet lesser toe problems, Achilles pain and plantar fasciitis/heel pain.
