I have been an NHS doctor since 2002 and a Consultant since 2019, with a permanent position as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust, and the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, UK. My elective practice is exclusively in knee surgery (including total and partial knee replacements), specialising in a broad range of acute and chronic knee conditions and injuries which can occur throughout active adult life.

Knee treatments I offer are after sports injuries that require a multi-disciplinary approach including the need for arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery treating meniscal or cartilage damage, and ligament injuries requiring reconstruction surgery; most commonly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), building all the way up to multi-ligament knee injuries.

There are times when joint cartilage damage is seen and knee preservation surgery can be offered to slow the progression of symptoms, including cartilage regeneration or periarticular realignment osteotomy.

Joint damage can also be caused by inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or degeneration from osteoarthritis (OA). When joint damage is severe a partial or total knee replacement is a good solution once non-operative measures have been tried. If you present with a problematic knee replacement, this can be assessed with times when revision joint replacement may be required.

I am an accredited Intercollegiate Clinical and Educational Supervisor, and an active member of trauma, knee and sports societies. I have a keen interest in research, which has led to over 50 peer reviewed publications and four book chapters, many of which have been presented internationally. I am the National Institute of Health and Care Research Local Specialty Musculoskeletal Research Lead for the West of England, supporting multi-centre studies, and a peer reviewer for leading trauma & orthopaedic journals including the Bone and Joint Journal.

I was born in Cambridge with Australian parents and my Dad’s side originating from Latvia. I am married and have two daughters. One of our main interests is trail hiking, having previously hiked routes in Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, the Himalayas and the Andes. With two little ones to carry we are currently exploring trails in Wales and the South West of England!

I cycle whenever possible and have cycled through North and South Vietnam, regions of central China, to work every day, and for family weekends.

I enjoy sport with squash, tennis, and swimming now taking over from previous team rugby, cricket and volleyball.
