Mr Sunil Amonkar

Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon

MB BS, FRCS (Ed), Cert Ed

I qualified from Newcastle University in 2001 and went on to complete my basic and higher surgical training across Yorkshire and the North East. During this time, I specialised in breast and reconstructive surgery and trained in all the major breast screening units in the region. This gave me extensive experience in assessing and managing both breast cancer and benign breast conditions.

Before becoming a consultant, I was selected for a nationally recognised advanced Training Interface Group (TIG) fellowship in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. These fellowships are limited in number and approved by the General Medical Council. I completed mine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and private hospitals across Yorkshire, where I developed additional surgical techniques and further refined my approach to patient care.

I began my consultant practice in 2013 as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast and General Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. In 2016, I was appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, where I now practise exclusively in breast surgery. Across my NHS and private work, I have treated more than a thousand breast cancer cases. I am also committed to supporting patients beyond treatment and regularly share my experience with breast cancer support groups.

I care for patients with the full range of benign and malignant breast conditions. My approach combines cancer treatment with techniques from cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, with the aim of achieving the best possible appearance following surgery.

This includes breast cancer surgery such as wide local excision (removal of the cancer while preserving the breast), sometimes combined with local volume replacement flaps to reshape the breast. I also perform lipomodelling, also known as fat transfer, to help correct contour defects, and therapeutic mammoplasty, which is a form of breast reduction or lift adapted to remove cancer while maintaining breast shape.

I am actively involved in research as a Principal Investigator for studies run through the National Institute for Health and Care Research, and I have supported a number of clinical trials throughout my career. This helps me stay up to date with the latest evidence and best practice, which I bring into my clinical work.

Alongside my clinical role, I am passionate about medical education. I act as a surgical lead for medical students, examine for Newcastle Medical School, and teach and mentor current breast surgery trainees and TIG fellows. I have also completed a postgraduate qualification in Medical Education at Newcastle University, supporting my commitment to high-quality teaching and training.
