Mr Robert Taylor

Consultant Ophthalmologist

FRCOphth, FRCS (Glasg)

Specialises in

  • Childhood and adult squint
  • Double vision
  • Eye misalignment
  • Lazy eye

I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in adult and paediatric ophthalmology, particularly strabismus (squint) and motility. As a consultant I have performed over 2,000 strabismus procedures to date. I qualified in 1985 from Guy’s Hospital, London University and worked in Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds before taking up a consultant post in York in 1996.

Adult strabismus involves assessing and operating for ocular misalignment. Indications would include double vision, secondary symptoms such as headache, and improving appearance if one eye misalignment is causing social difficulties.

Paediatric ophthalmology covers any issue that a child or parents may have with respect to the eyes and/or vision. Surgery is rare (less than 1%) but active treatments such as glasses and or occlusion (patching) can be considered. I am able to offer second opinions for those who may have visited an optometrist on the high street and left with questions unanswered.

I have published 58 peer review papers, two books and two book chapters. I have given 181 oral and poster presentations at scientific meetings, both nationally and internationally.

I was a clinical tutor from 1996 to 2000 before being made clinical director, until 2004. I have also sat on the paediatric ophthalmology sub-committee from 2005 to 2011.

My research interests include refraction accuracy, and strabismus outcomes. I am also interested in various models of healthcare delivery.

I offer treatments and services for the following;

  • Eye muscle repositioning surgery
  • Eye muscle treatment with Botulinum toxin
  • Strabismus
  • Thyroid related eye muscle deviations

I have many interests in the outside world. I have some success at trail running, winning all of the Hardmoor 26.2 races for my age group. I also enjoy cycling, triathlon and skiing. Indoors, I enjoy listening to 70s music and finding forgotten tracks on the B side of albums. I also like foraging for mushrooms, and occasionally eating them!
