Mr Awad carries out elective general surgical procedures but also provides an on-call service at the Trust which means he treats emergency patients, including complex bowel operations, abdominal injuries caused by trauma, gall bladder disease and vascular emergencies. His extensive experience enables him to provide a thorough and complete service for general surgery, which includes all areas of the abdomen.
At Spire Bushey Hospital, Mr Awad provides a general surgical service including laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole gall bladder removal), hernia repair, and general lumps and bumps. Alongside this, with his extensive experience in treating vascular disease (both arterial and venous), he provides a complete varicose vein service from simple thread veins treated by sclerotherapy in out-patients, to complex recurrent varicose veins, using a range of surgical techniques (Endovenous laser ablation, surgery, foam therapy) treated in theatres. He treats peripheral arterial disease, aortic aneurysms and carries out carotid surgery for stroke prevention.
Along with a colleague, Mr Awad developed West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust's vascular and endo-vascular service over the last 15 years. This has now become one of the leading vascular centres in the region. Annually, Mr Awad and his team see approximately 2,000 out-patients in the Trust and treat around 1,000 in-patients, carrying out 500 operations including 200 major operations in general and vascular surgery.
Mr Awad prides himself in being kind and understanding, taking the time to understand patient's problems in detail. Specifically for varicose vein treatment, Mr Awad lays out a plan of treatment customised for each leg of each patient, which may include different surgical techniques depending on the severity of the veins and the patient's expectations. Mr Awad has a professional and gentle bedside manner that puts patients at ease. A key member of Mr Awad's team is his secretary Julie, who is easily contactable by phone and email.
