Mr R Maximilian Cervellione

I am a full-time Paediatric Urologist at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, one of the largest units in the country. I am the Clinical Lead for the Department and am nationally commissioned to provide the Bladder Exstrophy Service in Manchester which is one of only two centres in the UK for the treatment of this complex congenital malformation.

I have advanced the treatment of the exstrophy complex in the British Islands with the introductions of new strategies of treatment following my clinical fellowship at John’s Hopkins Hospital in 2009. I have trained several international and national paediatric urology fellows.

My special interests include urinary frequency and urinary accidents in children, Enuresis (bed wetting) in children and adolescents, Giggling incontinence, Circumcision and other treatments of phimosis (tight foreskin), complex revision of hypospadias surgery, inguinal hernia surgery, hydrocele (PPV ligation), retractile testis undescended testis (orchidopexy and laparoscopy), varicocele, vesico ureteric reflux (VUR) in children, pelvic-ureteric junction obstruction, vesico-ureteric junction obstruction, ureterocele, posterior urethral valves, bladder exstrophy and epispadias, scar revision for children and adolescents, umbilical hernia repair, epigastric hernia.

I was Lead for PGME at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital until 2018 and continue to be involved with postgraduate medical education at both Manchester and Salford University and nationally with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I have published over 60 papers on basic signs and clinical research in the main urological and paediatric surgical journals with over 800 citations, wrote four book chapters, and I have presented my work all around the world. I am also a recognised international expert in the treatment of bladder exstrophy, varicocele and hypospadias.

I am a regular reviewer for the Journal of Urology and Journal of Pediatric Urology with over 100 reviews in the last 10 years and several editorial comments on major paediatric urological publications. I am an FRCS Urology examiner and a trustee of the British Association of the Paediatric Urologists.
