Professor Philip Chapman-Sheath

Orthopaedic Surgeon

BSc, MB BS, FRCS, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

I am a Fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a highly specialised practice for both adult and paediatric patients with complex knee problems. I have over 20 years of clinical experience of successfully treating sports knee and arthritis-related problems and I am the most experienced paediatric knee surgeon in Southampton. My national published data for knee surgery continues to show long-standing excellent personal results and infection rates that are well below the national average. I featured in the Daily Mail 2018 “Good Doctors Guide” as one of the top knee replacement surgeons in the UK.

I completed my medical degree and a further honours degree in psychology at the highly prestigious Imperial College Medical School (London 1992) and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994. I trained in orthopaedic surgery in Oxford, and completed further specialist fellowship training in complex soft tissue and knee replacement surgery in Australia (University of New South Wales, Sydney) and Canada (University of British Columbia, Vancouver).

Appointed in 2003 as a Consultant Knee Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, I am trained in all aspects of knee surgery, including sports injuries, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroscopy (keyhole), primary, partial and revision knee replacements as well as innovative cartilage transplantation surgery.

I am also a Visiting Professor in the Department of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, involved in research in the Novel Medical Devices team within the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Studies – currently studying wearable electronic devices to permit the remote monitoring of surgical and sports injured patients.

I regularly operate, teach and lecture in many other institutions both nationally and internationally as an invited Faculty for National Knee Societies. Here I present lectures on a wide range of subjects with particular emphasis covering surgical techniques to optimise function and performance, the complex analysis and correction of failing and infected knee replacements, computer guided knee replacement and living cartilage cell transplantation techniques to resurface the damaged knee joint.

I work closely alongside schools, military units, sports clubs and teams within the region. I give advice and treatment on all aspects of sports knee injuries and their prevention – both understanding and managing the high expectations of the elite athlete. I do this with a perfect balance comprising of experience gained studying for my undergraduate degree in psychology and still personally participating in sport at the highest level, by continuing to represent both England and Great Britain at International Target Rifle Shooting.
