Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Philip Chapman-Sheath at Spire include:
I am a Fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialised practice for both adult and paediatric patients with highly complex knee problems. I have over 20 years of clinical experience of successfully treating knee related problems and I am the most experienced paediatric knee surgeon in Southampton. My national published data for knee surgery shows long-standing excellent personal results and infection rates that are well below the national average.
I completed my medical degree and a further degree in Psychology at the highly prestigious Imperial College Medical School (London 1992) and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994. I trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Oxford, and completed further specialist fellowship training in complex soft tissue and knee replacement surgery in Australia (University of New South Wales, Sydney) and Canada (University of British Columbia, Vancouver).
I am a Consultant Knee Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, trained in all aspects of knee surgery, including sports injuries, ligament reconstruction, knee arthroscopy (keyhole), primary, partial and revision knee replacements.
My research interests include the science of bone biology, fracture healing, the development of bone graft substitutes, knee replacement design & function and the psychology of patient outcomes following successful surgery. I have written many scientific papers & published book chapters on the diagnosis, management and outcome of orthopaedic trauma patients and on bone biology.
I am Fellow of the European Knee Society, British Knee Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and International Cartilage Repair Society.
I regularly operate, teach and lecture in other institutions both nationally and internationally as Faculty for Knee Societies, presenting lectures on a wide range of subjects with particular emphasis covering surgical techniques to optimise function and performance, the complex analysis and correction of failing and infected knee replacements, computer guided knee replacement and living cartilage cell transplantation techniques.
