I am a Consultant Surgeon specialising in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of hernia. This includes the repair of epigastric, umbilical, inguinal, femoral and incisional hernias but not hiatus hernia.

I have a strong interest in the treatment of gallstone disease by routinely performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (the removal of the gallbladder by keyhole surgery) and laparoscopic clearance of gallstones from the bile duct.

I have also trained with Mr David Lloyd in Leicester who has developed and proven the effectiveness of The Lloyd Release Procedure for the definitive treatment of groin pain in elite (and not-so-elite) athletes. As a result, I am the only surgeon in the UK, other than Mr Lloyd himself, trained and approved to perform The Lloyd Release.

In addition to my clinical commitments, I take a keen interest in the training of both medical students, from Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities, and junior surgeons as they rotate through the Fife unit. I also regularly teach on courses for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

I studied Physiology (and golf) at St Andrews University (1987-1991), then went on to study Medicine at The Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London (1991-1996). Having taught anatomy and worked in A&E for a year, I moved back to Scotland to a training post in Edinburgh in 1998, where I remained for the entirety of my surgical training and during which time I was awarded an MD in surgical training and assessment.

I completed my training in Edinburgh and, following a fellowship to Melbourne, returned to take up a post as an Upper GI and General Surgery Consultant in Fife, a post closely linked to Edinburgh via the south-east Scotland cancer network. As the result of my commitment to surgical teaching, I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer to the University of Edinburgh Medical School and The Bute Medical School in St Andrews University.

Does not see children under 13 years.

Life is always busy with two young children, but I manage to keep fit(ish) and to maintain the house and garden whilst usually having a hobby car in bits somewhere. I enjoy shooting when I can find the time and, having sacrificed my golf game on the altar of surgical training, I am gradually returning to the game and, with luck, somewhere near to my St Andrews handicap.

I also enjoy singing, piano, guitar and listening to all forms of music, especially when accompanied by a good chewy red!
