Virtual consultations:
I have been a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust since 2019. My practice focuses on conditions affecting the ears, hearing and balance, as well as general ear, nose and throat problems in both adults and children.
I specialise in otology (ear surgery), neurotology (disorders of hearing and balance), and lateral skull base surgery, which involves treating complex conditions deep within and around the ear at the base of the skull. Each year, I carry out around 150 major ear and skull base procedures. These include surgery for cholesteatoma, hearing reconstruction, and repair of a perforated eardrum. I am experienced in a range of surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches designed to reduce recovery times where appropriate.
Alongside my specialist work, I regularly treat common ENT conditions. This includes performing procedures such as tonsillectomy, grommet insertion, septoplasty to correct a deviated nasal septum, sinus surgery, and treatments for nosebleeds.
As part of my NHS role, I work closely within multidisciplinary teams to care for patients with complex ear disease, balance disorders, and skull base conditions, including vestibular schwannoma, NF2, and paraganglioma. I am also involved in the management of hearing implants, including bone conduction and middle ear devices.
My medical training has taken place across Newcastle upon Tyne, London, and New Zealand, and I have worked in several major teaching hospitals in the North East. I completed advanced fellowship training in otology and lateral skull base surgery at University Hospital Birmingham, alongside a TWJ visiting fellowship in otology. These opportunities provided me with specialist experience in complex ear surgery, hearing implants, and skull base techniques.
I have a particular interest in hearing and balance disorders, including hearing loss and Ménière’s disease. I am involved in research in these areas and have contributed as a lead author to peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
Teaching and training are also important parts of my role. I lead advanced otology training courses for ENT trainees and international delegates, and I support the development of junior doctors and medical students.
In my role within the NHS, I also lead on clinical governance, focusing on maintaining high standards of care. I am committed to using evidence-based and innovative approaches to ensure that my patients receive safe, effective treatment and feel supported throughout their care.
