"Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon, Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust."
I have been a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Warrington and Halton Hospitals for the past 15 years. I am one of eight colorectal surgeons providing specialist colorectal services to a population of nearly 350,000 patients, alongside participating in the emergency on-call service.
I specialise in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal and general surgery and perform a wide range of procedures for both cancerous and benign bowel conditions. Alongside routine colorectal cancer surgery, I also undertake specialised procedures including extra-levator abdomino-perineal resection of the rectum. I am the only surgeon within the trust performing laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy for external rectal prolapse.
My clinical interests include bowel cancer surgery and the treatment of benign colorectal conditions such as diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, haemorrhoids and fistula-in-ano. I also specialise in abdominal wall reconstruction for complex hernia repair using techniques including the Rives-Stoppa procedure. In addition, I perform laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery and hernia repairs.
To date, I have performed over 400 bowel cancer operations using both laparoscopic and open surgical techniques. I have also carried out more than 300 cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal procedures) and over 1,500 colonoscopies.
I am an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Endoscopist and was recently appointed Optical Diagnosis Champion for the Mersey Endoscopy Network. I have a particular interest in therapeutic endoscopy and have led the introduction of dye-spray endoscopy techniques for surveillance in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Alongside surgical treatment, I carry out both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy procedures. My approach is focused on providing safe, evidence-based and personalised care, ensuring patients feel fully informed and supported throughout their treatment journey.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Nagarajan Pranesh at Spire include:
