I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Spire Yale Hospital and Spire Abergele Clinic. I am a high-volume specialist hip and knee surgeon with over 18 years’ experience as a Consultant, with a particular interest in robotic-assisted and personalised knee replacement, minimally invasive hip replacement including the muscle sparing Direct Anterior Approach (DAA), and rapid recovery following joint replacement surgery.

My focus is on delivering personalised care for every patient, with treatment tailored to their individual circumstances and goals. I firmly believe that good surgical care is about more than technical expertise. Listening carefully, understanding patients’ expectations, showing empathy, communicating clearly and using technology appropriately are all important in providing truly personalised care.

I was among the early adopters of robotic-assisted knee replacement in the UK and have developed one of the largest robotic knee replacement practices in Wales and the Wirral. My practice combines robotic technology with modern personalised alignment principles, taking account of each patient’s individual anatomy rather than using a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

I have extensive experience in minimally invasive hip replacement surgery and now also offer the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) for suitable patients. DAA is a muscle-sparing technique that may facilitate faster early recovery, earlier mobilisation and reduced post-operative restrictions in selected patients. The choice of surgical approach is personalised to the individual patient rather than using a single technique for everyone.

My practice incorporates enhanced-recovery principles aimed at early mobilisation, effective pain control and faster return to normal activities. Selected patients may be suitable for day-case hip or knee replacement, returning home on the same day as surgery.

My practice also includes knee arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy and Arthrosamid® injection, an innovative non-surgical treatment option for knee arthritis in suitable self-funding patients.

I completed my higher specialist training in orthopaedics in Wales and undertook a joint replacement fellowship in Cardiff. I subsequently completed an advanced hip and knee fellowship in Montreal, Canada, before being appointed as a substantive Orthopaedic Consultant in 2008.

I am an invited speaker at national and international meetings on topics including robotic knee replacement. I am also an official trainer for robotic knee replacement and regularly host visiting surgeons from the UK and overseas who come to learn these techniques.

Throughout my career, I have been involved in research and have received awards at national and international meetings. I am passionate about teaching and training future surgeons. I have regularly trained Specialist Trainee Registrars from the Oswestry and Wales orthopaedic rotations and have been nominated for Trainer of the Year. More recently, I was instrumental in establishing an advanced Robotic Knee Fellowship at Ysbyty Gwynedd, where senior trainees gain experience in robotic knee replacement.
