Mr Markus Sagmeister

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon

BSc (Hons), MBBS, FRCS (Tr & Orth), Dip Hand Surg (Eur)

Specialises in

  • Adult hand and wrist conditions
  • Hand and wrist arthritis treatment
  • Joint replacements (fingers, thumb base and wrist)
  • Nerve compression, trigger finger and Dupuytren’s disease
  • Hand and wrist trauma and sports injuries

I trained at Imperial College London, where I obtained first class honours for an intercalated BSc in 2012 and was awarded the Stanford Cade (p.a.) and the Faculty of Medicine Prizes for performance in surgical specialties and overall undergraduate performance, respectively, upon qualifying in 2014. I subsequently completed my postgraduate surgical training across London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. I achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Trauma and & Orthopaedics) in 2023 and completed a trauma fellowship at University Hospital Sussex’ Major Trauma Centre in Brighton before undertaking an orthoplastics hand & wrist fellowship at Sydney Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia. I hold the European Diploma in Hand Surgery and have an NHS consultant practice at UH Susseex.

My practice focuses exclusively on adult hand and wrist conditions, with a special interest in treating arthritis with motion-preserving procedures such as joint replacements in the fingers, thumb base and wrist. I also routinely treat nerve compression syndromes, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s disease, ganglion cysts, mucous cysts and ligament/sports injuries. I have a regular on call commitment at UH Sussex and treat the whole spectrum of hand and wrist trauma, from minor injuries to limb-threatening emergencies.

In addition to my clinical work, I enjoy training the next generation of surgeons as a supervisor for higher surgical trainees, by teaching on postgraduate hand and wrist surgery courses or as an instructor on Advanced Trauma and Life Support courses. I’m a passionate advocate for patient safety and am the Radiation Protection Supervisor for T&O at UH Sussex.

My academic interest is in thumb base arthritis and upper limb anatomy, having published my research findings and presented on an international level. I have an active role in a national multi-centre hand surgery trial and regularly attend national and international hand surgery congresses to stay up to date with the latest techniques.

I pride myself in my patient-centred approach, ensuring that your unique goals are at the centre of your personal treatment plan. I use the latest evidence-based techniques in hand and wrist surgery, acquired during my international fellowship training, to get the best outcomes and enable early return to work and sports. I work closely with experienced hand therapists to enhance your rehabilitation and institute a rapid recovery protocol whenever possible.
