I have been working as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon for over eight years. I specialise in minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery and trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) to treat bowel cancers, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse and obstructed defaecation.

I offer modern surgery for bowel cancer, haemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, faecal incontinence, disorders of defaecation, diverticular disease, pilonidal sinus disease and all types of hernias. I have one of the largest practices in colonoscopy and endoscopic polypectomy in the North West of England.

I also have a special interest in haemorrhoidal disease, faecal incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and surgery for pilonidal sinus. I have extensive experience in endoscopic removal of large bowel polyps and I am a founding member of the Merseyside and Cheshire Small and Early Rectal Tumours (SERC) MDT and of the Wirral Polyp MDT. I created and chair the Wirral Pelvic Floor MDT, one of the first in the UK.

I have performed over 200 laparoscopic bowel resections for cancer, including over 50 resections for rectal cancer. I also have significant experience with robotic rectal cancer surgery, having already performed 30 such procedures. I perform numerous surgeries for rectal prolapse, of which 25 have been robotic ventral mesh rectopexies, currently the most advanced therapeutic option for rectal prolapse and obstructed defaecation. I have extensive experience with minimally invasive treatment for haemorrhoids and I perform over 100 trans-anal haemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) with rectal mucopexy yearly. I have extensive experience with colonoscopy and endoscopic polyp treatments, performing in excess of 500 colonoscopies annually, of which over 1/3 are therapeutic.

I constantly audit my results and I am encouraged by the fact that my complication rates are consistently well below the national average for all procedures performed. This is reflected in a short inpatient hospital stay and earlier return to work and normal activities for my patients.

My enduring commitment to improving patient access to diagnosis and treatment for bowel cancer has been recognised by having been entrusted to act as Chair of the Merseyside and Cheshire Colorectal Cancer Clinical Network Group. The group is responsible for developing and promoting colorectal cancer care within the region.

I am Clinical Lead for Colorectal Cancer and Clinical Lead for Pelvic Floor Surgery at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. I introduced and chair the Wirral Pelvic Floor MDT with the aim to offer a multidisciplinary approach to the care of patients presenting with complex pelvic floor conditions: rectal prolapse, faecal incontinence, defaecatory disorders. I am also Clinical Lead for Cancer Services at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, overseeing cancer care and service delivery and development within the trust, working in partnership with primary care and regional stakeholders.

I have authored scientific articles in prestigious surgical journals such as Annals of Surgery, Diseases of Colon and rectum and Colorectal Disease. I was awarded an MD by the University of Hull in 2003 for my thesis “Cytotoxic T cell immune response against telomerase in colorectal cancer patients”. I was supported in my research activities by grants from Cancer Research UK, Bowel Disease Research Foundation, Society of Academic and Research Surgery of Great Britain and Ireland and Yorkshire Cancer Research.
