My principle interests are laparoscopic and open major abdominal and pelvic cancer surgery. I was appointed to University Hospital Southampton (UHS) in 2014 as a bladder and kidney cancer surgeon and have established myself nationally, as one of the country's highest volume cystectomist (bladder removal surgeon).
I also augment the laparoscopic and open nephrectomy service as well as dovetailing with the prostate team continuing with transperineal biopsies and prostate high dose rate brachytherapy. I continue to enjoy my benign work consisting of vasectomy/peno-scrotology and endoscopic surgery such as transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) to help male urinary symptoms.
Outside theatre, I remain highly patient focused. I have led a team at University Hospital Southampton to transform the local Enhanced Recovery Programmes for patients after major urological surgery and I have written the national guidelines for the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
I graduated from Imperial College in 2002 before carrying out my basic surgical training at the Royal Surrey Hospital followed by two years of clinical research at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital in London. The focus of this research was prostate cancer, diagnostic prostate biopsies and robotic radical prostatectomy. In 2009, I published MSc thesis 'The evolving role of transperineal template prostate biopsies' before continuing my higher training in Wessex.
Most recently, I have co-founded a charity, ACTIONurology (www.actionurology.co.uk). The central tenet is to help fund treatments that the NHS can't subsidise. In particular we are currently fund raising for our Intraoperative Radiotherapy and on-site Clinical Psychologist funds.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Julian Smith at Spire include:

On a personal level, I am married with two children. I enjoy keeping fit and will pretty much play any sport to do this! On Saturday mornings I coach an under 6 football practice on Whitecliff park in Poole and if there is any time left, I am not afraid of Lycra and can often be spotted on my roadbike.
