I have been a consultant endocrine, hernia and general surgeon for over 12 years. I am a specialist in endocrine surgery with a special interest in parathyroid disease. I specialise in general and emergency surgery with a specific interest and expertise in thyroid, parathyroid and groin hernia surgery. My areas of expertise in groin hernia surgery is in open local anaesthetic and keyhole repair.

I supervise around 500 operations a year in the NHS. In the last 10 years I have performed in excess of 800 neck endocrine resections, 400 cholecystectomies and over 500 groin hernia operations in the NHS and private practice.

Spire Southampton Hospital has the best facilities. The theatre, nursing and admin staff are second to none, making my work at Spire effortless by giving me more time to concentrate on my patients.

I wrote the first textbook dedicated to parathyroid gland function and disorder. I was a co founder of one the first acute surgery units in the UK at Southampton and have led a number of research and quality improvement projects in emergency laparotomy that has given me expertise in how outcomes and data can be used to improve outcomes in healthcare and am currently Director of clinical outcomes for University Hospital Southampton.

I am the lead for the Wessex emergency laparotomy network looking to use quality improvement ideas to improve outcomes in high risk emergency surgery across nine hospitals in Wessex. The Wessex AHSN patient safety collaborative fund this project and I provide surgical consultancy advise to them. I set up and run the Wessex Endocrine Society that provides an annual multi-professional study day to any endocrine discipline specialist or trainee.

I enjoy my spare time. My son and I are season ticket holders to Saints and (usually) cheering from the stands. Otherwise, I enjoy being in the mountains: skiing and ski touring in the Alps, cycling, hiking and climbing in the summer. In the UK summer, I sail and open water swim. Mountain biking is another firm favorite with my son and partner. I am a keen reader of fiction.
