Consultant Hand and Wrist Specialist

MBBS, MSc, FRCS(Orth), European Diploma in Hand Surgery

Specialises in

I have been a Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon since November 2000 and my NHS practice is at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. I studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital, London, undertook a year of research in Oxford and had general surgical training in Oxford and Gloucester, plastic surgery training back at St Thomas' Hospital and then higher specialist training in orthopaedic surgery based at Addenbrooke's Hospital. At Oxford I was a member of Trinity College and undertook research into limb development and wound healing, being awarded an MSc by research. I later undertook a fellowship in hand surgery in Oxford and was awarded the European Diploma in Hand Surgery in Amsterdam in 2002. This is a qualification held by a relatively small number of hand surgeons in the UK and Europe.

I have an interest in all hand and wrist conditions. Specific, common examples, include: Dupuytren's disease, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Cubital tunnel syndrome, Arthritis in the hand and wrist, Tendon problems (such as 'trigger finger' and 'de Quervain's disease'), 'Lumps and bumps' such as ganglion cysts and other swellings, Non-specific hand or wrist pain/ 'RSI', Fractures of the hand and wrist.

For surgical prcedures I only operate on hand and wrist conditions, except for ulnar nerve surgery at the elbow. The procedures that I perform most commonly are: carpal tunnel release, tendon sheath injection, release of constriction of tendon sheath (eg trigger finger), excision of ganglion, excision of trapezium (for thumb base arthritis), and Dupuytren's surgery.

I have held the post of Clinical Director of the Orthopaedic Department at Addenbrooke's Hospital and I have been Chief Medical Adviser to British Ski and Snowboard.

I am on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hand Surgery (European volume).

I lecture on courses in hand surgery and teach students and trainee specialists.
