Mr James Allibone

I am a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon, specialising in cervical surgery, thoracic surgery and lumbar surgery. The treatments I offer include coccydynia, conservative management of spinal conditions, disc replacement, injections for spinal conditions, management of brachialgia and sciatica, management of neck and low back pain, minimally invasive spinal surgery, spinal fusion, spinal surgery, spinal tumours and syringomyelia.

I was appointed as a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2002. I was the Lead Spinal Surgeon at the hospital. In 2007 I moved my NHS practice to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. I am currently the Lead Spinal Surgeon there, responsible for complex spinal cases.

My particular areas of interest are degenerative disease of the lumbar, thoracic, cervical spine and spinal tumours. I have considerable experience in the conservative and surgical management of these cases. Although a neurosurgeon, I no longer perform any brain surgery, confining my interest to the spine.

I qualified from The London Hospital Medical College in 1989. I did my general surgical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and my neurosurgical training in North London based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

I have had a number of local, regional and national roles in spinal surgery. I have sat on the executive council of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons; I am currently a member of the National Clinical Reference Group for complex spinal surgery and have led the North London metastatic spinal tumour group. I am the lead clinician of the complex spinal group at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and a member of the tumour team which deal with complex primary tumours of the spine.

I am a member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society and the British Association Spine Surgeons. I regularly present at national and international meetings.
