Mr Ian Shackleford
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MB BS, FRCS (Ed) Orth
I have performed lumbar disc replacement for over 16 years and cervical disc replacement for over eight years. I have been involved in teaching these procedures worldwide and am involved in the continual development of the prostheses and techniques. I have also been involved in the development of posterior dynamic stabilisation procedures, both interspinous devices and pedicle based systems.
My fellowship training in Nottingham is where I developed a particular interest in degenerative disease of the spine, spinal biomechanics and their relationship to painful conditions of the spine. Having developed skills in interbody fusion I naturally moved into disc replacement surgery and flexible stabilisation techniques.
I was appointed to Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham over 20 years ago. I already had extensive experience of general orthopaedics, sports medicine and particularly spinal surgery, having spent two years training on the busy spinal unit.
Since starting at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Spire Cheshire Hospital I have continued my general orthopaedic and sports medicine practices, whilst developing a modern spinal service offering treatment ranging from pain management, through minimally invasive to major fusion and reconstructive surgery at all levels of the spine. Several research projects are now up and running.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Ian Shackleford at Spire include:
