Professional profile

I run the cornea and external disease service in Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. I specialise in corneal and external disease including ocular surface inflammation, infection and scarring, corneal dystrophies such as Fuchs’ Endothelial Corneal Dystrophies, Keratoconus and dry eye disorders. This includes surgical management through lamellar corneal transplantation and cataract and refractive surgery in complex cornea and external diseases.

I trained in South Wales, Oxford and the West Midlands Deaneries. I was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust clinical research fellowship in 2008, completing my PhD in 2012 and achieving international prizes for my work in to scarring diseases of the ocular surface. I was an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of Birmingham from 2012 to 2014. I subsequently combined my research work at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) with my clinical fellowship in the cornea and external eye disease department of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), working with international leaders in their field.

I am passionate about teaching and I am an honorary clinical senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham. My research interests include methods to detect inflammation and progressive scarring on the ocular surface, how the immune system responds to infection and how improved measurement such as imaging systems can help detect these responses. My further interests include the role of lasers in improving outcomes in cataract and corneal surgery. I speak widely to audiences in the UK and abroad and I'm a reviewer for numerous ophthalmic and scientific journals.

My research interests: ocular surface immune regulation in health and disease, improved measurement of clinical disease activity and damage.
