Professional profile

I qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 1990 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1995. I undertook a period of research examining blood coagulation in aortic aneurysm repair for which I was awarded a higher degree (MD) by the University of Edinburgh.

I trained in Vascular and Endovascular surgery in Edinburgh, Leicester and Adelaide where I worked with Dr John Anderson who pioneered fenestrated stent-grafting for complex aortic aneurysms. I was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Vascular Surgery at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in February 2004. I am an Honorary Consultant Vascular Surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and is a member of the Regional Thoracic Aortic Multidisciplinary Team.

I practise exclusively as a vascular and endovascular surgeon and offer the full range of treatment options (medical management, endovascular treatment and open surgery) for patients with arterial and venous disease. I have a specialist interest in the management of aortic aneurysms and aorto-iliac occlusive disease.

I am a European mentor for fenestrated and branched stent-grafting for complex abdominal and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms and have performed/supervised over 120 fenestrated and thoraco-abdominal branch stent-graft procedures. I was the first clinician in Europe to use Cook Medical’s pre-loaded fenestrated aortic stent-graft, and was the first in the world to use an off-the-shelf branch stent-graft to repair an emergency thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm. I have published over 100 peer reviewed papers.

My consultant colleague, Martin Claridge and I provide specialist vascular and endovascular services in the private sector as Premier Vascular.
