I attained specialist accreditation in accident and emergency medicine with appointment as a consultant in 1990. I have previous orthopaedic and general surgical experience and Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I am also Founder and Clinical Director of the Scottish Trauma Audit Group as well as Examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Faculty of Accident and Emergency Medicine. I gained a higher medical degree awarded for thesis based on injury severity scoring assessment and am the author of a textbook, chapters and 50 journal articles on accident and emergency care.

In my spare time I am a motorcycle and sports car enthusiast. I am also a member of the Medic 1 accident flying squad which attends road traffic accidents throughout the Lothian and Borders regions of Scotland.
