Professional profile

I am a consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in sports knee injuries, cartilage regeneration and knee and hip joint replacement surgery. I qualified in 2004 and have performed thousands of surgical procedures with excellent clinical results and high levels of patient satisfaction. I am a NHS consultant at Salford Royal University Teaching NHS Trust, which is one of the leading hospital trusts in the UK. It serves as the MTC (Major Trauma Centre) for Greater Manchester, treating severe and complex cases of trauma surgery. I am the clinical lead responsible for elective surgery, national joint registry and enhanced recovery. I am also actively involved in teaching and training young doctors and surgeons of the future.

I have a passion for research and have published numerous peer-reviewed publications, and presented at international, national and regional academic meetings, winning a number of awards. I am currently involved in a number of multi-centre national trials, as well as collaborations with the universities of Manchester and Salford. My current work is looking into stem cell research and biomaterials. I have recently been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

I grew up in Manchester, attending Bolton School where I was School Captain in my final year, excelling both academically and in sporting pursuits including representing his school at 1st XV rugby. I studied medicine at The University of Edinburgh from which I graduated in 2004. After completing my house officer year, I spent time at the University of Oxford undertaking a prosectorship, teaching anatomy, which developed my grounding and a passion for surgery. Following my basic surgical training, I gained entry into higher specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery, both on the Northwest rotation.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and has completed a Fellowship in knee surgery, becoming a specialist in this field. I completed my training in July 2014, and secured a position as a consultant at Salford Royal NHS Teaching Hospital.

During his career, he has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and continues his interest in research. This includes current collaborations with the University of Manchester and Salford University looking into stem cell research and biomaterials.

It was as a medical student that Bilal’s passion for Orthopaedic surgery was ignited after injuring his knee in a football match. He required an ACL reconstruction to get him back to sport, and ever since he has understood the importance of getting people back to full activity; whether as a high level athlete or just to keep fit.

Bilal ensures that his surgical practice is delivered to an exceptionally high standard, and prides himself on making the correct decisions for and with his patients, ensuring excellent clinical results and happy patients.
