I have been a Consultant Knee Surgeon for 19 years, and my practice at Spire Manchester Hospital is dedicated entirely to knee surgery. Over the course of my career, I have performed more than 1,000 total knee replacements, 1,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions and 5,000 knee arthroscopies.

I have a strong interest in understanding how patients recover following surgery and continually use patient feedback and outcome data to help improve the care I provide. I enter all of my joint replacement procedures into the National Joint Registry and also work with Amplitude, an independent company that surveys patients about their experience and outcomes following treatment. In addition, I review outcome data through Spire’s My Clinical Outcomes programme.

My National Joint Registry profile provides an overview of my practice and shows that, on average, the patients I treat are slightly older and have more co-existing health conditions than the national average.

My long-term results include outcomes at 10 years following both total knee replacement and unicompartmental knee replacement surgery. Following total knee replacement, the expected number of patients requiring revision surgery was 14, while the actual number was 7. Following unicompartmental knee replacement, the expected number requiring revision was 5, while the actual number was 3.

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which are collected independently, show that my patients improve their Oxford Knee Score by an average of 16 points six months after surgery, in line with the national average. Data from My Clinical Outcomes shows this improves further to 18 points at 12 months following surgery.

The National Ligament Registry reports that many of my patients begin treatment with scores below the national average, but by one year after surgery they have recovered to approximately the national average across all measured areas.

My International Knee Documentation Committee scores improve from a pre-operative score of 40 to 79 at one year following surgery, representing a 39-point improvement. EQ-5D scores, which measure health-related quality of life, improve from 0.40 before surgery to 0.85 at one year following treatment.

My focus is always on helping patients regain mobility, reduce pain and return to everyday activities with confidence, while ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout their treatment journey.
