Virtual consultations:

I have been a consultant knee surgeon since 2002. My entire elective practice is devoted to knee surgery. I have been trained in and provide a full range of knee surgery. I am very interested to know how my patients progress after treatment. I review patients in clinic as required. I have also employed a company (Amplitude) to survey all my patients by email after surgery. This data allows me to see what effect the treatments are having. The data also feeds into national registries, such as the National Joint Registry and the National Ligament Registry. I then get feedback on my own results.

The latest data in June 2018 from the National Joint Registry shows that my revision rate (re-do rate) for cemented total knee replacements is 0.9% (9 in 1000) at five years post-surgery. This compares to the national average of 2.2% (22 in 1000). My revision rate for unicompartmental knee replacements at five years is 5.4% (54 in 1000) compared to the national average of 6.5% (65 in 1000).

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) are independent and are used to monitor the recovery of patients after surgery. For knee replacements the Oxford Knee Score (OKS), which is a score out of 48, is used. The national average improvement on OKS after a knee replacement is 15 points. At Spire Manchester my average increase is 21 points.

I have a special interest in arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery. This allows torn menisci (cartilages) to be resected (removed) or repaired. Damage to the articular cartilage can be treated and loose bodies removed. I have performed about 4000 arthroscopic knee procedures.

Knee ligament damage is becoming more common. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most common knee ligament that requires surgery. I have performed over 700 ACL reconstructions. I submit my data to the newly formed National Ligament Registry which is looking to improve outcomes for patients.

Arthritis causes people a great deal of pain and is becoming more frequent in younger people. I undertake the full range of surgeries available and tailor these to the needs of each patient. I perform robotically assisted total and partial knee replacements, which allows me to implant the knee replacement individually for each patient. My revision (re-do) rates compare favourably with the national average. I have performed over 1000 total knee replacements.

Adolescent patients provide different challenges to adults as well as some that are the same. I have extensive experience in treating adolescent knee problems. I am one of only a few orthopaedic surgeons in Manchester who is able to operate on adolescent patients (12 years old and above) privately.
