Mr Andrew Baldwin
Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial, Head and Neck Surgeon
MB ChB (Hons), BDS, FRCS (CSiG), FRCS (OMFS), FDSRCS (Ed), FDSRCS
I undertake all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including removal of wisdom teeth, buried roots, jaw cysts; management of oral lesions, neck lumps, jaw and facial pain, facial trauma, and oral medicine. My specialist interest lies in head and neck cancer with reconstructive surgery, salivary gland disease, and dental implant placement.
I qualified in Dentistry in Liverpool (1983) and medicine/surgery in Manchester (1994). Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh were obtained, and the higher surgical training pathway completed in the North West region, before I was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in 2003.
In addition to my clinical activity, I have been engaged in NHS clinical managerial roles locally and regionally.
For 10 years (2004 – 2014) I led the head and neck oncology service within my NHS Trust, and sat on the head and neck cancer pathway board for Greater Manchester and Cheshire. I was Clinical Director for the Head and Neck service (Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT Surgery and Plastic Surgery) at Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust from 2014 – 2017. From 2017, I have held the position of Divisional Clinical Director (for the surgical division) at North Manchester General Hospital, in addition to carrying out a busy clinical workload.
I am heavily involved in medical leadership roles nationally. I'm keen to influence and mould the future progress of my specialty, and was proud to sit as an elected member on the Council of British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2012 – 2015). I currently chair the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Surgical Specialty Board of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
In addition to my clinical work I have a strong interest in medical education. I undertake postgraduate education with the North West and Mersey Deanery, and regularly teach undergraduate medical and dental students at The University of Manchester, both in a clinical setting (wards, theatres) and also formally with lectures and tutorials.
I examine for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh nationally and internationally. I acted as Regional Advisor for Royal College of Surgeons of England (2007 – 2015), helping to guide surgical trainees in the early stages of their career, and also helping to ensure national standards are met during trust medical staff appointment committees. I am regularly asked to deliver formal teaching, and I've lectured both at home and overseas in major conferences.
