Mr Andre Ismail

I am a Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon. Over the past 15 years I have performed over 3,000 cataract operations, 750 major eyelid operations and 200 major tear duct operations. I continuously audit my surgical results to ensure the best outcome for my patients and to help update and develop my practice. Having had general ophthalmic training, I am experienced in all the common eye problems.

I have a particular depth of experience in small incision cataract surgery, all forms of eyelid surgery and watery eye problems. In cataract surgery, I use simple eye drop anaesthesia for rapid painless recovery of vision, but take pride in ensuring treatments are tailored to each patient, using local anaesthetic and sedation techniques as required for total comfort. My experience in dealing with eyelid problems ranges from dealing with medical eyelid conditions, to undertaking surgeries for eyelid position problems, lesions around the eyes, and aesthetic or reconstructive eyelid issues. Watering eyes are a common problem and I have a full depth of experience in investigating and treating this problem, with minimally invasive surgery if required.

I was born and educated in London, and qualified at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1996. I held surgical training posts in Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology in London and the South East. After completing my General Consultant Ophthalmic Training, I spent two years in sub-specialist fellowships in Oculoplastic and Lacrimal Surgery in Salisbury and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During these two years I developed my sub-specialty interests in cataract surgery, eyelid surgery and tear duct surgery.

I am a consultant at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. I am the Clinical Director for Ophthalmology and have introduced and developed Eyelid and Lacrimal Surgery at the Trust. I take a keen interest in teaching the next generation of Trainee Ophthalmologists and I am a Lead for Ophthalmic Clinical Governance.
