In my clinical practice, I am happy to help with all general ophthalmic conditions. I offer specialist treatment in cataract surgery, including multi-focal lenses.

My sub-specialist area of interest is in diseases of the retina and provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for these. These include age related macular degeneration, complications of diabetes, retinal vein occlusions, retinal detachments, macular holes and epiretinal membranes. Managing these conditions include laser treatment, intravitreal injections and surgery. I have further interest in genetics eye diseases, and in particular connective tissue disorders affecting the eye.

I qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, in London with a further degree in pharmacology from King’s College London. After training posts in neurosurgery and emergency medicine, I undertook ophthalmic training at leading institutions in London including Moorfields Eye Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital and the National Hospital for neurology and neurosurgery. During this period I was comprehensively trained in ophthalmology.

I subsequently completed two further sub specialist surgical retinal fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital and The Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne; the largest eye hospital in Australia.

I have received numerous awards for my medical and academic work. These have been awarded from Moorfields Eye Hospital, the European Society of Ophthalmology, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Syme Medal (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh). I have over 40 peer reviewed publications and have lectured across the world.

In addition to my clinical specialisation, research is an integral part of my work. I have led multi centred research investigating the genetics of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments and ectopia lentis. I co-discovered the first genetic association for retinal detachments and have provided the definitive genetic analysis for ectopia lentis. For this work, I was awarded a PhD from the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Syme Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). I have received further awards from Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the RCSEd and the European Ophthalmology Society. I have authored over 40 peer reviewed publications (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=chandra+a+and+eye) and two book chapters. I have raised over £100,000 in grants for academic research from Moorfields Eye Hospital, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fight for Sight UK.

I continue my research collaborations across the world, and am the research lead for ophthalmology at Southend University Hospital. I peer review scientific papers for numerous medical journals and am a section editor for the journal Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology; journal of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
