Expertise: Mr Rai has been a Spinal Consultant since 2001, operated on over 3000 complex spinal operations, has demonstrated expertise on a wide range spinal conditions with emphasis on spinal stenosis (elderly), cervical fusion/disc replacement, minimal access keyhole surgery for disc prolapse and scoliosis.
Mr. Rai works from St John’s & St Elizabeth Hospital, St Johns Wood, London and Spire Norwich Hospital, Norwich and is also a NHS consultant (appointed 2001). Mr. Rai treats patients from across the UK and abroad at his practice. He treats a wide range of problems, such as disc herniations in the neck and lower back, spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis in adults and children, plus trauma, infections and tumours. His approach emphasises non-invasive procedures and he refers to surgery only when other conservative treatment options have been explored.
Mr Am Rai was elected President of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons by his surgical peers and has been on the BASS Executive Committee for 6 years. He has published on national best practice surgical guidelines, helped develop the British Spinal Registry (over 100,000 patients), involved in National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and government led regional variation in surgical practise across England. Mr Rai set up the Travelling Spinal Fellowship (administered through BASS & British Scoliosis Society) aimed at prospective new Spinal consultants.
He is fellowship trained (Australia, European Travelling Fellowship, South Africa and USA) and to date has trained over 12 spinal consultants who currently work throughout the UK. Mr Rai has helped develop core curriculum for spinal training and is the Foundation Programme Director for junior doctors. He has more than 16 years of consultant spinal experience and is a regular reviewer of unit level surgical practice in the UK via BASS and Royal College of Surgeons.
He is director of a spinal charity Spine Aid which, arranges regular trips abroad for a team of spinal surgeons, medical students, neurophysiology technicians and anaesthetists to help treat under privileged children with spinal deformities. Mr Rai hopes to devote more time to this charitable work.
Mr Rai is a advocate of giving experienced no nonsense validated advice with outcome data to confirm treatment plans. He will allow as much time as is required to give his patients a balanced opinion. This will often involve reviewing images, discussion with other specialists and surgical colleagues. All his patients have validated outcome data, which can objectively assess his outcome and compare to other units. Mr Rai appreciates the disability from spinal disease as he himself has had spinal surgery.
