Miss Meara Dean

I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based in Cambridge with a private practice at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. I provide expertise in the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of a range of colorectal and general surgical conditions, providing evidence-based and patient centered care. As a recognised expert in cancer surgery, my special interest is improving patients outcomes with use of minimally invasive surgical techniques. I have extensive training and experience in laparoscopic ("key hole") surgery, robotic surgery and minimally invasive trans anal surgical techniques. I am Cancer Lead for North West Anglia Trust and a member of the Cancer Subcommittee of the Association of Coloproctology Great Britain and Ireland.

I offer work up, care and advice for presentations such as change in bowel habit, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, anal symptoms and symptomatic 'lumps and bumps'. I am dedicated to surgical education and training, and am a Undergraduate Specialty Tutor for Cambridge University Clinical School and a GMC accredited surgical trainer. I am an accredited endoscopic trainer in colonoscopy and advanced polyp removal techniques.

Particular areas of interest include colorectal surgery, colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, anal fistula, haemorrhoids (including THD/Anolift), anal fissure (including Botox), pilonidal sinus, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, rectal prolapse, anal abscess and anal fistula.

I also offer general surgery procedures for inguinal hernias (open repair), abdominal wall hernia surgery (open repair), umbilical hernia surgery, lipoma excision and cyst excision.

I have conducted scientific research that investigated the mechanisms of cancer development and spread, and surgical techniques that may reduce cancer recurrence. This experience provided valuable experience, and I am an invited speaker at conferences nationally and internationally, and also provide expert opinion for medical device companies. My advanced surgical training has been varied and international, including Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge, The Royal Marsden Hospital London and the Cleveland Clinic Ohio, USA. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England).
