I specialise in all aspects of the eyelid, lacrimal (tear drainage), eye socket and orbital disease. I also have a weekly general ophthalmology clinic. I have a specific interest in eyelid biopsy, tumour removal and reconstruction, eyelid lifts, brow lifts, cosmetic eyelid surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation, blepharospasm, watery eye surgery (punctoplasty, eyelid tightening, dacryocystorhinostomy), orbital disease (including causes of bulging eyes), thyroid eye disease, eye removal and eye socket reconstruction.
I read medicine at Oxford University and graduated in 2000 with degrees in medicine and physiological sciences (first class) winning several prizes and awards. After initial experience in emergency medicine in Australia and Anatomy Prosection at Oxford University, I undertook specialist ophthalmic training in London and then the Oxford Deanery. My sub-specialist expertise in oculoplastic and orbital surgery has developed over several years, through advanced sub-specialty training in Oxford and Buckinghamshire and as an oculoplastic and orbital fellow at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
I was appointed in February 2015 as a full-time consultant ophthalmic, oculoplastic and orbital surgeon at BMEC and honorary consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. I am the lead orbital surgeon at BMEC.
To date, I have performed over 1,700 oculoplastic procedures and 800 cataract operations. I am the lead for orbital service at the Birmingham Midland Eye Centre (BMEC).
I have an interest in teaching and I have given a number of presentations at international and national conferences. I am the joint lead for the BMEC Oculoplastic and Orbital TSC (trainee selected component for advanced sub-specialty training). I am also an educational and clinical supervisor for junior doctors training in ophthalmology at BMEC. I supervise an international oculoplastic and orbital surgical fellow.
I am the informatics lead for BMEC and the ophthalmology representative for informatics at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, with an interest in the procurement and implementation of new information technologies.
