I have been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon for 25 years and I currently work at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and The Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Young People in Edinburgh.
I provide general adult comprehensive ophthalmic consultations and surgery including small incision cataracts surgery, refractive lens exchange and multifocal and toric lenses. I have performed over 7,000 adult cataract operations with a very low complication rate (Based on National Ophthalmic Database figures).
I also manage the full range of paediatric ocular and neuro-ophthalmology conditions, from the common conditions, such as strabismus (squints), amblyopia (lazy eye) and blocked tear ducts (sticky eyes) to rarer ophthalmic conditions such as congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity. I perform cataract surgery and laser treatment on infants and children, and I perform over 30 squint operations per year.
I completed my general ophthalmic training in rotations based in Dublin, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Sheffield. During my training, I successfully became The Fellows of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Ireland and the Royal College of Ophthalmologist in London. I completed my subspecialty paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus training at The Jules Stein Eye Institute, University College of Los Angeles, USA.
In addition to my clinical work, I am very interested in research and have published more than 50 papers in peer reviewed high impact index international journals. I am also interested in training and teaching and an Honorary Senior Lecturer of University of Edinburgh. I have been a senior examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for over 20 years.
