Specialises in

  • Refractive lens surgery

  • Dry eye syndrome

I am primarily a paediatric ophthalmologist and manage the full range of paediatric ocular and neuro-ophthalmology conditions, from the common conditions, such as strabismus (squints), amblyopia (lazy eye) and blocked tear ducts (sticky eyes) to rarer ophthalmic conditions such as congenital cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity. In addition, I also undertake general adult ophthalmic consultations and surgery including small incision cataracts surgery.

I have been a consultant ophthalmic surgeon for 20 years and I currently work at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and The Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Young People in Edinburgh. Prior to this, I completed my general ophthalmic training in rotations based in Dublin, Cambridge, Aberdeen and Sheffield. During my training, I successfully became The Fellows of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Ireland and the Royal College of Ophthalmologist in London. I completed my sub specialty paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus training at The Jules Stein Eye Institute, University College of Los Angeles, USA.

I perform cataract surgery and laser treatment on infants and children and have performed over 5,000 adult cataract operations with a very low complication rate (National Ophthalmic Database figures). I perform over 60 squint operations per year.

In addition to my clinical work, I am very interested in research and have published more than 40 papers in peer reviewed high impact index international journals. I am also interested in training and teaching and a Honorary Senior Lecturer of University of Edinburgh.
