Professional profile

Dr Shanthi Paramothayan is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine, who has worked in the NHS for 17 years. She was a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust for 14 years where she was, at different times, the Lead for Sleep Services, Lead for COPD and Lead for Lung Cancer. She was also the Foundation Training Programme Director (2010-2012), Director of Medical Education (2012-2015) and the Associate Medical Director for Education (2015-2016). She was an Associate Quality Dean for Health Education England from 2017-July 2018.

Dr Paramothayan is experienced in managing all Respiratory problems. She is a Bronchoscopist and trained to undertake and report sleep studies, thoracic ultrasound and pleural procedures. Her specialist interests include sarcoidosis, lung cancer, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.

She completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge and her undergraduate medical degree at St Bartholomew's Hospital, University of London. She qualified with Distinction and several prizes, trained at various London Hospitals, including the Royal Brompton, completing her Specialist training in 2001. She also has a Masters in Medical Law (LLM) and undertakes Medico-Legal work.

Dr Paramothayan is committed to teaching and training undergraduates and postgraduates. She was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School from 2005-2018 and participated in the MBBS examinations. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, is a member of the MRCP 1 Board and a PACES examiner. She has a Masters in Medical Education, is a Member of the Association of Medical Educators (ASMEE) and an elected Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has several publications, including Systematic Reviews.
