I have been a Consultant Physician in respiratory and general medicine since 2001. I am currently working at Medway NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to that, I was a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust for 14 years where I was, at different times, the Lead for Sleep Services, Lead for COPD and Lead for Lung Cancer. I was also the Foundation Training Programme Director (2010-2012), Director of Medical Education (2012-2015) and the Associate Medical Director for Education (2015-2016). I was an Associate Quality Dean for Health Education England from 2017 - 2018.
I am experienced in managing all respiratory problems. I am a bronchoscopist and trained to undertake and report sleep studies, thoracic ultrasound and pleural procedures. My specialist interests include sarcoidosis, lung cancer, asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.
I completed my PhD at the University of Cambridge and my undergraduate medical degree at St Bartholomew's Hospital, University of London. I qualified with distinction and several prizes, and trained at various London Hospitals, including the Royal Brompton, completing my specialist training in 2001. I also have a masters in medical law (LLM) and undertake medico-legal work.
I am committed to teaching and training undergraduates and postgraduates. I was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School from 2005-2018 and participated in the MBBS examinations. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a PACES examiner. I have a masters in medical education, am a member of the Association of Medical Educators (ASMEE) and an elected Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have several publications, including systematic reviews. I was commissioned to write a textbook by Wiley-Blackwells entitled “Essential Respiratory Medicine” which was published in December 2018. This textbook is aimed at medical students, junior doctors, non-respiratory specialists, general practitioners, nurse specialists and allied health professionals.
