I have been a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) since 2006. I have a specialist interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), endoscopy (gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy) and also look after adult inpatients in nutrition.
I am experienced in the management of small bowel diseases including coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Gastro-Oesophageal reflux disease. I am an advanced colonoscopist accredited for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
In my NHS practice I perform at least three weekly sessions consisting of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. Annually I perform over 300 colonoscopies and not only maintain standards above the national average for key performance targets such as colonoscopy completion rates and polyp detection but also high scores for comfort.
I qualified from Cardiff University School of Medicine in 1992 and trained as a doctor in South Wales and completed my gastroenterology training in the Midlands.
I am a member of the faculty on the national JAG accredited endoscopy training courses and have also been responsible for the training of nurse endoscopists through the Health Education England Clinical Endoscopist Training Programme.
I currently hold the post of clinical audit and quality improvement lead in gastroenterology at UHL and have done so for over five years.
