Professor Richard Keen

Professor Richard Keen

Consultant Rheumatologist

MB, BS, BSc, PhD, MRCP

I graduated from St Mary’s Hospital, London, UK in 1988. After general medical posts in London and Sheffield I started professional training in rheumatology, and during this time developed my specialist interest in osteoporosis. As a research fellow at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, I studied the genetic regulation of postmenopausal osteoporosis, and was awarded Young Investigator awards by the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) and the European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS).

I am now Director of the Metabolic Bone Disease Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK. I also hold a senior lecturer appointment at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science, University College London, UK. I head a clinical research team, and am currently an investigator on several research studies evaluating new treatments for osteoporosis, fracture healing and other metabolic bone disorders. I am the chief investigator for the ZODIAC Study, which is assessing the role for bisphosphonates in the management of bone loss following spinal cord injury. I also head the VIDEO Study, an arc funded clinical trial examining the effect of vitamin D supplementation on symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.
