Dr Raghav T. Bhatia

Consultant Cardiologist

MBBS, MRCP (UK), Ph.D., FRCP Edin.

I am a Consultant Cardiologist with over a decade of clinical experience and lead the inherited cardiac conditions and sports cardiology service at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

I studied medicine in Norwich and completed cardiology training across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. During this time, I undertook a Cardiac Risk in the Young fellowship at St George’s, University of London, where I completed my PhD focusing on the prevention of sudden cardiac death.

My specialist practice includes inherited cardiac conditions and sports cardiology, including cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, athlete’s heart and ion channel disorders. This includes providing clinical and genetic evaluation, family screening and interpretation of post-mortem findings. I work within a multidisciplinary service, collaborating across regional and national networks to deliver integrated, high-quality care.

I am passionate about preventative cardiology and particularly screening for the early detection of quiescent heart conditions associated with sudden cardiac arrest and death. This has included extensive involvement with Cardiac Risk in the Young and screening programmes for sporting organisations including the Football Association, Rugby Football Union and elite level cricket. Following screening, I support individuals through onward assessment, risk stratification, exercise advice and return-to-play decisions.

Alongside my specialist interests, I provide general cardiology care for chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, syncope and coronary artery disease. I hold accreditation in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and have extensive training in interventional cardiology, which informs a holistic approach to cardiovascular care. Clear communication and shared decision-making are central to my practice.

My clinical work is supported by sustained academic output, including peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and contributions to guidelines. My research has been recognised internationally, including the British Cardiovascular Society’s Best of the Best award for three consecutive years and recognition as a Young Investigator Award finalist at the British Cardiovascular Society, European Association of Preventive Cardiology and European Society of Cardiology conferences. I also hold an Honorary Lectureship at St George’s, where I lead an MSc module in Sports Cardiology.
