Dr Peter Haworth

Consultant cardiologist and honorary senior lecturer

MBBS FRCP

"The facilities at the Spire Healthcare allow an unrushed consultation in relaxing surroundings. The staff are always helpful and friendly ensuring all questions are answered."

I am a consultant cardiologist and honorary senior lecturer. My practice encompasses all aspects of adult general cardiology with a specific interest and expertise in interventional cardiology, including stenting for treatment of angina. I also have a strong interest in the management of hypertension.

I also undertake pacemaker insertions and run a specialist hypertension clinic in the NHS offering invasive treatment, renal denervation, which can help control blood pressure in specific cases. I am the lead author on the UK consensus paper for offering this treatment. I am happy to see patients with hypertension, chest pain, palpitations or general heart concerns.

I have overtaken well over 2000 coronary interventions (stent implantations) and have a very high utilisation rate of intravascular imaging to ensure optimal results. Annually I perform around 150 stent implantations and around 50 pacemaker insertions.

I was appointed as a consultant at the Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth in 2014, joining a busy interventional unit. I perform diagnostic angiography and coronary artery intervention to treat angina (stents and balloons) and insert pacemakers for the treatment of slow heart rates.

I qualified from Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital, London with a BSc. (hons) degree in cardiovascular imaging in 1997 and MB BS in 2000. I trained in cardiology in the south east of England including research undertaken at the Royal County Hospital in Brighton. My interventional training was completed in Brighton and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. I was awarded the Auckland Interventional fellowship in 2012 and spent a year in New Zealand working in the world renowned heart unit there developing skills in complex coronary intervention.

In addition to my clinical work I am also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Univeristy of Portsmouth Medical School. I lead for vascular and cardiology and enjoy both teaching and integrating research between the two organisations.
