Specialises in
I am a specialist in gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital Trust where I was appointed as an NHS consultant in 2010. I am an advanced interventional endoscopist and undertake all endoscopic procedures including gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
I am an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening colonoscopist. I also perform endoscopic investigations of the liver called ERCP including cholangioscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. These procedures enable very close examination and investigation of the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts.
I have a sub-specialty interest and training in managing patients with liver disease including alcohol related liver disease and particularly in managing patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I will see patients with any aspects of liver disease including drug induced liver injury, hepatitis or jaundice.
I completed my gastroenterology training in London at King's College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. I spent six years working at the Liver Unit at King's College Hospital looking after patients with liver disease before and after liver transplantation. I completed my research in survival characteristics of patients with end stage liver disease. The results of my research were published and presented at national and international meetings.
I have a keen interest in advanced endoscopy and perform all aspects of both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. I have recently been appointed as the clinical director of abdominal surgery and medicine which includes endoscopy in Brighton for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust. I set up the hepatobiliary endoscopic ultrasound service, spyglass cholangioscopy and introduced the enhanced sedation/anaesthetic endoscopy list in the trust.
I am also involved in teaching and management. I am the director of the annual South East endoscopy symposium and teach and train doctors in all aspects of endoscopy. I have taught these skills internationally and within the UK.
My other treatments include: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound, haemorrhoid banding and spyglass cholangioscopy.
My clinical interests include: Investigation and management of patients with gastrointestinal problems. These include irritable bowel syndrome, dietary sensitivity and food allergy, indigestion, heart burn, hiatus hernia, swallowing problems or abdominal pain. I can help manage problems with diarrhoea, constipation, changes in bowel habit with or without rectal bleeding. If you already have a diagnosis of Irritable bowel syndrome or Inflammatory bowel disease I will talk through your diagnosis and management.
